OUR MISSION MAUKA TO MAKAI

FROM THE MOUNTAINS TO THE SEA

About Kahākūkahi
Nonprofit Organization

Since the devastating 2023 Maui wildfires in Lahaina, Kahākūkahi Ocean Academy has strengthened its focus on supporting the mental well-being of West Maui keiki.

Through ocean-based learning, keiki build strength, confidence, resilience, and adaptability in a dynamic marine environment. These skills extend well beyond the water and support them in school, at home, and throughout their lives.

We invite you to join us in cultivating a community that empowers children through ocean sports, environmental stewardship, and a deep connection to ʻāina (land) and kai (sea).

Guided by licensed professionals, keiki engage in hands-on ocean learning using surfboards, stand-up paddleboards, windsurfers, and Hawaiian canoes. With added training in safety equipment and CPR models, children build the awareness, skills, and confidence needed for a lifetime of safe and responsible ocean engagement.

We make science and conservation fun, engaging, and meaningful through ocean-based learning. As keiki participate in these experiences, they develop a deeper connection to the environment and grow into active stewards of ʻāina (land) and kai (sea).

We believe every child in our community deserves access to ocean experiences, which is why we provide mentorship, instruction, and all necessary equipment at no cost.

Together, we are cultivating the next generation of ocean guardians and helping build a healthier future for our community and environment.

Beyond the waves, we collaborate with local artists, transforming debris from our beach cleanups into powerful art installations that amplify the message of ocean conservation. Understanding that the health of our oceans is directly tied to everything upstream, we also introduce keiki to experts in regenerative agriculture and Hawaiian restoration practices, allowing them to connect with the ‘āina (land), get their hands dirty, and develop a deep sense of mālama (stewardship).

For those especially moved to embrace the path of an ocean guardian and advance as watermen and women, we offer internships, scholarships, and ongoing mentorship, ensuring they remain valued members of our growing community dedicated to protecting and preserving our environment.
